Life Skills - Budgeting & Nutrition on a Budget

Our Life Skills classes focus on self-care and self-sufficiency, teaching students to be proactive with their physical and mental well-being, so that they are better prepared for adult life and to become contributing members of the community. Classes are taught by experienced and knowledgeable volunteers from our community.

Our three mid-October classes brought budgeting and nutrition together…Step 2 - Budgeting and Getting out of Debt, Health and Wellness - Nutrition, and Grocery Shopping on a Budget. In the budgeting class, Jen Krans focused on strategies to get out of, and stay out of debt, and becoming financially stable. For the nutrition class, Cindy Brown taught strategies and tricks for eating healthier including adding veggies to dishes for a more filling meal, healthy meal planning/prep and choosing/creating nutritious, satisfying recipes, bulk cooking, proper freezing and reheating. Our guided grocery shopping at Walmart with Meredith Woodson and Cindy combined budgeting and nutrition. Students learned about planning ahead/creating a shopping list, price comparing for items, bulk foods, buying frozen instead of fresh produce to minimize waste, and how to stick to a budget of $30 per week for perishable items.

These classes truly support our mission of teaching students to understand they are capable of breaking their cycles, pursuing pathways of their choosing, and becoming self-sufficient adults.
